I’m sure I’m not the only writer who wrote an entire book and then had absolutely no idea of how to get it published. I’d always heard about struggling writers waiting out years of rejection before finally being accepted by a publishing company. Self-publishing wasn’t even on my radar. I have a friend who is a literary agent so I thought she would help me get published. Olga gave me some great information but explained that she couldn’t take an unknown author. I must prove myself first. This left self-publishing as my only other option. I knew nothing about it.
I took an online course through Hay House. My biggest take-away from that was that I needed to develop a platform before I did anything else. I didn’t even know what a platform was at the time. It means I had to drum up some interested readers who would buy my book. Luckily I had already had a business and had gained some knowledge in Facebook and Twitter Marketing.
I had no experience in blogging but it was one of the recommendations of building a solid platform. People want to know about the author and his/her writing style. They also want to know a little about the book. For the writer, it offers experience in writing consistently and meeting other writers. Blogging fits the bill for these challenges. It’s been a life changing experience.
I don’t have a huge platform but I’m confident that I have enough interest in my book Not My Story To Tell to publish it. I found a very helpful book, Successful Self Publishing by Joanna Penn. It’s explains the whole process and all the options available. I’m gaining real confidence in understanding what I need to do. I’d recommend it to anyone thinking of publishing a book.
Here’s the link to the free book. (I’m in no way affiliated.)
