Teens Say The Darndest Things

I’m an Educational Assistant who works in a regular high school classroom setting supporting students who have special needs. My job is challenging but very rewarding. I also find humor in the unlikeliest places. Take Grade Nine Science, for example. The teacher was reviewing matter, states of mattter, and other scientific topics when one of the students turned to me and said,

“Mrs. Brooks”.

This happens fairly often after the assigned work has been given because suddenly everyone needs my undivided attention. But this was right smack dab in the middle of the lesson by the teacher, who was standing at the front of the class talking. I turned toward the student and she continued. She said something and I didn’t hear what she said. I don’t hear very well. You can read more about my hearing problems here.

The teacher stopped teaching the lesson and turned to me. She said,

“Did you hear (student’s name)?”

I shook my head to indicate that I hadn’t. I was quite embarrassed that all this had interrupted the teacher and that all eyes were on me. She continued,

“She asked you how you get your hair like that.”

I’m sure I turned 50 shades of red. I said,

“Um…..that’s a little off topic. I just wash it.”

I had no idea what she meant by “like that” but I wasn’t going to ask. The teacher said I was lucky to have natural wave in my hair. I thanked her and she continued on with her lesson. I’ve written other posts about my hair. You can read them here and here.

Sometimes the funniest things happen in school.
