I belong to a women’s group called Beta Sigma Phi. It’s a sorority but not a college or university one. It was formed in Kansas City by a man named Walter Ross in 1931 during the Great Depression. He was a travelling salesman and saw the isolation that many woman were experiencing. He formed a club with the themes “Life, Learning and Friendship”. It’s a social organization with cultural and service components.
I’ve belonged for nearly 30 years and have had perfect attendance every year. Tonight I will be given the Masters Ritual. Master’s degree is the highest degree there is in Beta Sigma Phi. They may have to add another one since we women seem to be living longer lives. When I started there was no Masters. They added it as the members got older.
How interesting. Congratulations!

That was a true act of love, by Mr. Ross, to see women as fellow human beings, with real needs, at a time when many were viewed as appendages. You have earned this great honour and stand taller, in its wake.
