I’m a “Moon Child”

I was born under the zodiac sign of Cancer. We are most affected by the moon. When it is a full moon my moods change and I have to be very careful not to overreact. Last night was a full moon. In fact is was a Super Moon. I think I did well yesterday but I fear I overreacted today.

Part of my dilemma is my job. I work with autistic students in a regular high school. The moon affects everyone but particularly teenagers and even more particularly autistic teenagers. I brace myself for full moons. I know it’s very difficult for autistic teenagers any day but it magnifies around the full moon.

The most important part of my job is being an advocate for my students. Many people have no experience and don’t understand why autistic people behave differently. The short answer is that their brains are different. When teachers and other people at school don’t get that and want them to behave “normally” it sets them up for failure. I won’t tolerate that. Today I spoke up in defence of my student. I knew there would be repercussions. There were.

Supermoon be gone and let us go about our daily business without added stress and tension. Oh boy! Tomorrow is our Halowe’en party. More fun!

  1. I am a Cancer as well so I can definitely relate to this post. As well as the last part of your post about when Cancers are pushed too far. This is what I say to people all of the time. Once we are pushed to the point of no return there is no coming back for us.

  2. Fellow Cancer checking in! We tend to be both a sensitive and loyal bunch, so I can see clearly why you would be in the role of an advocate for autistic children. Such important work, Cathy.

I was laughing when I read that last part…I call it “I have a very long fuse.” I have tended to put up with a lot and when I’d had enough it was indeed game over. The problem with it has been that people find themselves surprised when I finally have had enough. I believe I have often given them the false impression I will tolerate bad behavior indefinitely.

    My best to you Cathy.
