What Are Your Goals For WordPress U 201?

I’ve decided to take blogging a little more seriously and learn as much as I can. As most things happen in life an opportunity presented itself to me and I grabbed it. I heard Wayne Dyer speak the other day he reminded me of an old Buddist Proverb,

“When the student is ready the teacher will appear”

I’m not even sure where I came across this online blogging course and I have not taken WordPress U 101 but I thought I’d just go for it anyway. I have done a little blogging in the past so I’m not a complete “newbie”. I still have plenty to learn.

Our first assignment told us to ask ourselves a few questions:

Why do you blog? For notoriety? To get a book contract? To self-publish? To establish yourself as a leader in your field? To gain followers? To connect with others? To clarify your own thoughts?

If your blog exceeded your wildest dreams, what would that look like? Would you have a different design? How many followers would you have? How much traffic? What sort of community would participate? How often would you post?

I had not considered most of these questions at all. I am writing a book, however, called “Not My Story To Tell” and it would certainly be my dream to get it published. I have been looking into self-publishing too. I do write to clarify my own thoughts. Gaining notoriety would help build my platform and increasing followers would help to do that.

Then we were told to make what I know as SMART goals.

Here are my goals:

1) Blog at least 4 times a week until September 8th.

2) Get at least 300 followers by the end of 2015.

3) Spend at least an hour a week reading and commenting on other blogs until October 31st.

Have you ever used “SMART Goals”?

      1. That’s kind of you to say. Thank you. Although we only tend to be using a small fraction of our brains and most of us are living in societies that like conformity one way or the other. It’s always wise to set achievable goals. I’m realising I’ve probably already set myself up for failure wanting to tackle each and every hint of ways to help and going for it with more than 3 goals…. hmmm. Needing to get back to getting it done I suppose…. Big time… It’s not always about the destination, it’s the journey along the way. All the best and enjoy your journey.

  1. Wow, your goals are definitely more aggressive than mine. I would be thrilled to find time to post consistently once each week.

I like your SMART application. I think I had heard it before, but I needed the refresher.

    1. Thanks @Dave. I either do something with gusto or not at all. I think most people are like that to some degree. I’ve started back blogging recently and have posted (almost) daily. I know that will slow down but I really want to be much more consistent than I have been in the past.

  2. The hardest part about writing the goals is actually writing them – the SMART frame helps focus your energy. You will attain them! Have a great week and I ma looking forward to following your adventure.

      1. I had 60 and chose a 25% increase, probably too low, but the key is maintaining the readership after the B201 course is finished. A wll as realizing now I have time but when school restarts, my time will be far less than it is now. Good luck and keep at it. It’s gonna be a great day.

  3. Hi Cathy, I am also on this blogging 201 adventure. I have a couple of comments about your page. I desperately wanted to find a “Home” button. How do I get to your home page if I am exploring your posts? I also wanted to see a menu of some sort. I realized after clicking your name that I could get home but it’s not evident at first glance. You page is neat and clean cut. I am reading from my laptop and not my phone so I cannot give you feedback on how it looks via mobile. I wish you well on your blogging and writing journey.

    1. Thanks very much for your feedback. This theme doesn’t seem to have my “About” page or any sidebars. I tried out almost all the (free) themes and reluctantly settled on this one because it showed my pictures well and I liked the larger font. I also liked the header. I may go back to the one I originally had.

  4. Thought it was interesting that you talked about SMART for setting goals. I have to use this in writing specific documents at work! Never thought of using it this way.
